Implementing Measure G |
Berkeley residents are known for being progressive and pioneers in social, economic, and environmental issues that define community life. The community demonstrated this in November 2006, when 81% of residents voted in support of ballot Measure G. Measure G sets an aggressive goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Berkeley by 80 percent by 2050 and empowers the Mayor to develop a community-based climate action plan by year-end 2007.

The Measure G implementation process is not only an opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also an opportunity to facilitate a positive, community-based movement in Berkeley that results in increased civic pride, a more tangible sense of place, and improved quality of life. The City of Berkeley is partnering with Sustainable Berkeley to hold various events, meetings, and workshops so as to keep the public informed of progress and ensure community participation in the development of the plan.

Global Warming Science & Impacts |
The impacts of global warming are not hard to find. Glaciers are disappearing all over the world. The hottest 22 years on record have occurred since 1980. Over the past century, temperatures have increased by over one degree Fahrenheit (0.8 degrees Celsius). In California, winter and spring temperatures are warmer, snow pack is melting one to
four weeks earlier, and flowers are blooming one to two weeks earlier
in the spring.
